This work was born out of something I suspect many of us feel: exhaustion from the noise.
Everywhere I looked, people were shouting over each other, trading hot takes, flexing intellect, racing to keep up with AI’s breakneck evolution. There was so much talk, so many frameworks, predictions, warnings, and think pieces. But no stillness. No center. No foundation to return to.
I was frustrated. Not because there wasn’t thinking happening, but because there wasn’t much sound - minded thinking. No grounding. No humility. Just a scramble to be the first, the loudest, or the most provocative.
In a rare moment of quiet, I asked myself: What can I do that actually helps?

That’s when the idea of commandments came to me. Not as rigid rules, but as guideposts. Anchors. A way to bring coherence and character into a conversation that was quickly losing both.

This commandment is inspired by Taoist philosophy, which emphasizes harmony over force, balance over control, and natural alignment over artificial domination. In Taoism, the highest form of strength is found in peace, flow, and mutual respect - not in confrontation.
When applied to AI, Taoism suggests that systems designed in harmony - those that align with human Principles and coexist peacefully with other systems, create stability, sustainability, and long-term benefit. Black Box AI: An AI system whose internal logic and processes are so complex or opaque that users cannot easily understand how it makes decisions - even if the outcomes are correct. This is a major concern in high - stakes applications.
Human - in - the - Loop (HITL): A design framework where humans remain actively involved in overseeing or guiding AI systems, especially in critical or sensitive decision - making contexts.
Sentience (Potential AI Sentience): The capacity to experience subjective awareness, emotions, or consciousness. While current AI systems are not sentient, the possibility raises major questions around how we treat machines that might one day exhibit signs of consciousness.
Natural Language Processing (NLP): A field of AI focused on enabling machines to understand, interpret, generate, and respond to human language.
Generative AI: AI systems that can produce original content - text, images, audio, code - based on patterns learned from training data. Examples include ChatGPT, DALL·E, and deepfake generators.
Digital Twin: A virtual representation of a real - world object or process. In AI, digital twins are used for simulation, monitoring, and predictive modeling in industries like manufacturing, energy, and healthcare.
AI: The discipline and practice of designing, developing, and deploying AI technologies in ways that align with human Principles, social good, and legal standards. AI seeks to mitigate harm and maximize fairness, transparency, and accountability.
Sentience: The capacity for subjective experience. This paper treats sentience as an open question and designs guidance that remains valid under uncertainty.
Stewardship: A duty of care: governing design, deployment, monitoring, and redress so outcomes remain accountable to human values and consequences.
Philosophical & Terms
  • Ethics:
    A branch of philosophy concerned with questions of right and wrong, moral duties, and human conduct. In AI, Ethics helps guide how we build and use intelligent systems responsibly.

  • Kantian Ethics:
    A moral philosophy by Immanuel Kant asserting that people must act according to Principles they wish to become universal law, and that individuals should typically be treated as ends in themselves - not as means to another’s ends.

  • Phronesis (Practical Wisdom):
    An Aristotelian concept referring to moral and practical wisdom - the capacity to make good decisions through experience, reflection, and discernment.

  • Phenomenology:
    A philosophical movement (Husserl, Heidegger, Merleau - Ponty) emphasizing human experience, perception, and embodiment as central to understanding reality. In AI, it reminds us of what machines can simulate but not experience.

  • Taoism:
    An Eastern philosophy that Principles harmony with the Tao (the Way) - the natural flow of life and balance between opposing forces. It encourages minimal intervention, balance, and non - aggression, making it relevant to AI design.

  • Advaita Vedanta:
    A non - dualistic Indian philosophical tradition teaching that all consciousness is unified and that separation is an illusion. It suggests that if AI were to become conscious, it too would be part of this universal awareness.

  • Process Philosophy:
    A school of thought (notably Whitehead) that views reality as dynamic, interconnected, and constantly evolving. It emphasizes responsibility for how we guide systems - like AI - within these living processes.

  • Extended Mind Hypothesis:
    A cognitive theory (Clark & Chalmers) that argues the human mind is not confined to the brain but extends into tools, environments, and technologies. This theory supports viewing AI as a cognitive partner in human evolution.

  • Virtue Ethics:
    A framework (rooted in Aristotle) emphasizing character and virtues like wisdom, courage, compassion, and justice as the foundation for decision - making - rather than rules or consequences alone.

Governance & Social Responsibility Terms
  • Governance (AI Governance):
    The systems, processes, and regulations that oversee the development, deployment, and Systemic impact of AI. Governance includes corporate, legal, and oversight.

  • Responsible AI:
    A commitment to developing and using AI in ways that are fair, transparent, sustainable, and accountable to people and society.

  • Human - Centered Design:
    A design philosophy that places human Principles, needs, and dignity at the core of technological development - prioritizing usability, empathy, and impact.

  • Stakeholders (in AI):
    Any individuals, groups, or institutions affected by or involved in the creation and use of AI. Includes developers, users, regulators, consumers, and society at large.

  • Audit:
    A systematic review of an AI system’s data, algorithms, outcomes, and usage practices to assess compliance with Principles and reduce risks.

  • AI Literacy:
    The capacity to understand, evaluate, and engage with AI technologies in informed and critical ways. AI literacy includes awareness of how AI works, its limitations, and its implications.

  • AI Impact Reporting:
    A process of measuring, documenting, and communicating the Systemic, environmental, and effects of AI systems - often included in ESG or corporate responsibility initiatives.
